Sustainability Pledge

We are composting as our ‘Sustainability Pledge’ as part of a whole school project.

The boys enjoy their fruit and compost the remains in our compost bin, rather than putting the food waste into the bin.

Please support out pledge by recycling food waste at home.

Composting is the decomposition of materials that originated from animals and plants. These organic materials can be things such as plant trimmings, vegetable cuttings, eggshells and teabags. The composting process produces a dark, crumbly matter that can be used as fertiliser in garden soil.

How materials change when they are heated

We were lucky enough to visit the science laboratory again this afternoon.

We used a bunsen burner to heat five different materials to see how they changed when heated.

Here are photos from our visit,

Mrs Barry, who is Head of Science, burnt pieces of magnesium to show us how it reacts vigorously with oxygen to produce magnesium oxide. We learnt that fireworks contain magnesium.

Please comment to tell us which materials changed and how.

Here is a link to a fantastic materials activity on the BBC website,

Maths – Time

Today we have been revising time. We have been looking at o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past on analogue and digital clocks. Later on this week we will be solving simple time problems such as,

I left my house at 4 o’clock and walked for 45 minutes. What time did I stop walking?

If you would like to continue to practise at home here are some games to help. The ‘quarter to’ and ‘quarter past’ times were particular tricky today!
