500 Words competition run by BBC Radio 2

Today Year 2 watched this BBC Lesson, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2yRxNT9ws7MkJsFvbxPfhry/500-words-2018-live-lesson

The programme introduces the 500 Words competition run by BBC Radio 2. Now in its 8th year, Chris Evans’ 500 Words is one of the most successful story writing competitions for children in the world and is open to every 5-13 year old in the UK. Its mission is to get children excited about reading and writing, regardless of their ability.

The boys planned some ideas for their story and will bring their planning sheets home today. We would like to encourage all boys to write their story and submit their entries online. There are some great prizes and they might even get published!

Please use the link below to find out more and to submit your entry. If you decide to take part please do send a copy into school so we can see it. We are also happy for all Year 2 boys not to complete their Story Spelling Challenge homework next week in order to take part in this competition.

The stories should be as creative and imaginative as possible.

Visit to the Church

Yesterday afternoon we took a wonderful walk in the sun to Little Heath Church. The boys thoroughly explored the church and successfully found all the different parts and artefacts we had discussed in class. Please enjoy looking at some of the many photos we took. How many objects can you name and can you remember what they each mean and their importance?

Recycle- o- Bot

Today your son will have designed a “Recycle-o-Bot”. This is a robot made out of junk!

We have told them that they are responsible to collect and bring in the junk they need. They will have written a list of their junk on a Post It note which is stuck into their Reading Record Book. Please can you help them collect the things they need and bring them into school no later than Thursday 1st February.

Thank you!

Heating Materials

Today we visited the labs to see how materials change when they are heated. We heated water, ice, chocolate, marshmallows and a metal screw.

Can you describe what happened to each item?

Try and use some of these words-

heat

melt

steam

boil

reversible change

irreversible change

Characteristics of Materials

Today we learnt about the characteristics of materials. We carried out an investigation to see if different materials could be twisted, squashed, stretched and bent.

Do you remember which objects could be stretched and twisted?

Which objects were we unable to change?

The boys enjoyed using the BBC Science Clips website. Please use this link to access at home,

Our trip to the William Morris Gallery

We had a fantastic day at the William Morris Gallery today. The Georgian house was stunning and the gardens lovely even in winter. The boys were complimented on their wonderful behaviour and impeccable manners by numerous gallery staff and curators. We really enjoyed learning more about William Morris, his family and friends.

William Morris was an active socialist. Can you remember what a socialist is?

A highlight was block printing in the style of William Morris. Which animals did you include in your prints?

One of William’s daughters became famous in her own right. Do you remember her name?

Enjoy our photos of this very successful trip.

Materials – testing the strength of different plastic bags

We tested the strength of five plastic bags in our Science lesson this afternoon.

Our experiment was a fair test because we only changed one variable each time.  Do you remember which variable was changed?

It was interesting to discover that four bags were extremely strong. Which bags were the strongest?

Can you test the strength of other plastic bags at home? Make sure that an adult helps as the bags get very heavy.

Plastics
Plastics are materials made from chemicals and are not found in nature. They are strong and waterproof, and can be made into any shape by applying heat. Plastics can also be dyed different colours or made to be transparent. Plastics are used to make all sorts of things, such as bags, bottles and toys.

Have a look at the BBC Bitesize website to find out more about plastics and other materials.
